“CAN I HELP YOU, Mr. Pfitser?”

“I hope so.”

After three full weeks at Bear Creek Ranch and literally dozens of visits to the front desk, Greg had stopped asking Natalie to call him by his first name. She stuck to formalities, as did every employee at the ranch with the exception of Corrine. She’d called him Greg, but not since the night she’d left him sitting at the fire pit. From then on, it had been “Mr. Pfitser” too.

Greg didn’t like the change. There wasn’t, however, anything he could or would do about it. Corrine had made her position on any potential relationship with him clear, and he respected her enough to abide by her decision. Considering he and the kids were leaving soon, it wasn’t a bad one.

Given the opportunity, however, he might be inclined to try and persuade her differently.

“You haven’t by chance seen a small black dog with floppy lips and bat ears running around?” he asked.

“Is Belle missing?” Natalie’s previously helpful tone had become one of worry.

“For about the last hour.”

“It could be worse.”

They both knew that for a fact. Last week, Ben and Annie had slipped away at the stables and gone missing for a grueling forty-five minutes. After the place had been turned upside down, with all hands looking for them, one of the wranglers finally found them in a stall, playing with a horse and her young foal. Thank goodness the mare was gentle and not overly protective, or she could have gravely injured the children. Greg had given Ben and Annie a long talking to and made them promise not to wander off again without checking with him.

He obviously couldn’t extract the same promise from Belle, and this morning, the dog had slipped under his radar.

“I’ll call maintenance.” Natalie had no sooner reached for the phone than it rang. “Front desk.” She glanced at Greg while she listened, then smiled. “Thanks, I’ll tell him.”

“Good news?” he asked when she hung up.

“That was the kitchen. They said to let you know they have your dog. They found her in the garbage and have her holed up in the restroom.”

Greg grimaced. “I should have looked there first instead of the woods around the cabin.”

“Well, the good news is she’s been found and no harm done.”

“We don’t know that yet. There could be trash strewn from the kitchen to the parking lot.”

“Give me a call if you need help.”

“Thanks. Me and the kids will manage.” He braced his palms on the counter and pushed off. “See you later today, I’m sure.”

“Tell Corrine I said hi.”

Greg stopped in midstep, not wanting to give away his excitement at that very prospect. “I will if I see her.”

“Oh, you’ll see her.” Natalie’s eyes gleamed mischievously.

Did she know something he didn’t?

Ben and Annie were waiting on the lodge porch for him, enthralled with the yo-yos he’d recently purchased for them in town. Together they headed to the dining hall next door. Greg wasn’t sure if the pleasure of seeing Corrine
